The March thaw garage cleanout in Indianapolis

The short answer

Clearing a winter-packed Indianapolis garage is priced two ways and you pay the lower one.

How the garage fills, month by month

This is not a metaphor. It is the same calendar in Fishers, in Beech Grove and in Speedway.

• October. Patio furniture, the grill, the hoses and the pool noodles come in off the deck. The car still fits.
• November. Holiday bins come down from the attic and land in the middle of the floor, because they are going back up in January.
• December. The car moves to the driveway. Just temporarily.
• January. Salt bags, a second shovel, an ice-melt bucket, a sled, and three things shoved sideways to reach the shovel.
• February. Nobody opens the garage door at all if they can avoid it. It is unheated, the concrete is at ground temperature, and there is a dead mouse somewhere.
• March. Fifty degrees on a Saturday. You open the door for the first time in six weeks and see what you have done.

The bins never went back up to the attic. They never do.

What the cold actually ruins

Freeze-thaw is hard on things people store in an unheated Indianapolis garage, and a lot of the March pile is stuff that did not survive.

• Anything with water in it. Pressure washers, hose reels, shop vacs, the coffee maker that lived out there.
• Paint and caulk. Latex paint that froze is done. It goes to household hazardous waste, not on the truck.
• Particleboard shelving. Cheap shelves absorb humidity through five months of temperature swing and sag into uselessness.
• Cardboard against the concrete. Condensation runs under boxes stacked on a slab. The bottom layer is always soft.
• The garage fridge. Beer fridges in unheated garages frequently do not survive an Indiana January, and nobody finds out until March. Mini fridge $115, upright freezer $149.

Detached garage, attached garage

Detached, on an alley. Irvington, Broad Ripple, Herron-Morton, Fountain Square, Garfield Park. The 1920s one-car with the sagging roof and the side door that swells shut. Access is excellent once the alley dries out — a truck backs to the door. Access in early March, before the gravel firms up, can be a mud problem, which is a real argument for booking the second warm weekend rather than the first.

Attached, suburban. Fishers, Westfield, Carmel, Greenwood, Avon, Noblesville. Wide apron, overhead racks, and a third bay full of the previous five Marches. Access is never the issue; volume is. Overhead storage racks are where a half-load guess quietly becomes three-quarters.

Two March garages, added up

Detached one-car in Garfield Park. Mini fridge $115 + lawn mower $65 + charcoal grill $59 + artificial Christmas tree $37 + small junk pile $82 = $358. Above the 3/8 rung of $338, so you take $338.

Two-car attached in Avon, third of it exercise equipment that has not been touched since the resolution failed. Treadmill $115 + weight bench $69 + weight set $93 + bicycle $37 + medium junk pile $129 = $443. Above the half-load rate of $431, so you take $431.

The pattern is consistent: once a winter garage has more than four or five real items in it, the truck ladder wins.

Do it before the yard work starts

There is a narrow, genuinely good window in central Indiana, and it is roughly the back half of March into early April. Warm enough to work with the door open, dry enough that the alley and the yard are not mud, and before the mowing season starts eating your Saturdays.

Miss it and the garage stays as it is until October, because from May onwards the lawn, the garden and everything else take the weekend. Then the patio furniture comes back in and the cycle restarts.

If you are in Speedway or the neighborhoods off Crawfordsville Road and 16th Street and you rent the driveway or the garage bay out over race weekend, this window is not optional — April is the deadline, not May.

What does not go on the truck

Garages are where household hazardous waste accumulates in this climate. Set these aside for a county drop-off and check the current options for your county: frozen and unfrozen paint, stain and thinner, ice-melt chemicals in damaged containers, lawn and garden chemicals, motor oil and antifreeze, gas cans, propane cylinders and car batteries.

Everything else is fair game. Drain the mower and it goes at $65. Take the tank off the propane grill and the grill goes at $71.

What the crew does

Two people work from inside the garage out, including the rafters and the overhead racks, load the truck, sweep the slab, and take it to the appropriate facility. You do not need to pull anything into the driveway first, and there is no long-carry charge for a deep detached garage at the back of a lot.

Most one-car garages are a couple of hours. A packed three-car is most of a morning, which is still a lot less than the four Saturdays you were planning to spend on it.
